Rejected Ideas Part Deux

As promised, here is part two of two, of our Rejected Comic Book ideas. I've often thought that Preacher would make an excellent animated series in the vein of Spawn or some of the more adult-themed animes out there. Of course a high budget live action TV series would be even better, I just don't think anybody is really willing to put any money behind the idea. Supposedly, HBO has the live action show in development, but we haven't even heard of any casting rumors for over a year. Unless I'm seriously behind in nerd news, I'd basically consider the project dead.

For those who haven't read Preacher, it's completely gross, disturbing and probalby not really appropriate for anybody. That being said, the story is original, compelling and a hell of a lot of fun. It's a lot like The Boys, except instead of just being a vehicle for Garth Ennis' disturbed grudge against superheroes, it actually has characters you care about and a story that is simply one of the best there is.

I am 99.9% sure we'll do some rejected comic book ideas again (since we have a bunch of ideas we didn't use), but for now we'll take a break before the idea gets overused.

Rejected Ideas - Unrejected

It's been about oh...forever, but we've finally updated with a comic that doesn't have reused art and isn't a Chibi comic. Sorry it took so long, but Mike was out of the country and didn't have photoshop with him.

In our comic development wiki we have a section entitled "rejected strips," which basically contains any strip that Mike is unwilling to draw due to moral issues, usually followed up with comments such as "You people are horrible - Mike". We thought it would be fun to draw these strips as if they were being brought to a Marvel/DC editor who would of course promptly reject them. Though in reality, a cover like this would actually see the light of day. This strip took a while to make, cause it's actually a series of three strips that we were planning to publish in one week, and I was waiting for them all to be completed. In reality, Mike refused to draw a cover with a pregnant Speedy and Dr. Light getting married, so our series has been reduced to a double feature. Look for the next cover in a few days.

As amusing as the concept of Psylocke vs. Omega red is, I would like to acknowledge that this pairing actually occurred fairly early in the Jim Lee run on X-Men. I find it horribly amusing that somehow Psylocke, who is British woman with a fairly conservative costume, was transformed into a buxom Asian vixen, and given a costume that amounts to a bathing suit. Granted the costume is rather conservative for present day comics, but in a pre-Image world it was quite slutty. Then conveniently Marvel introduces Omega Red soon after who's gimmick is that he has two tentacles. Coincidence? I think not.

Scott originally complained that the drawing didn't evoke enough of a Hentai feel. If that is the case, it's cause Mike and I were unwilling to google image search for reference material. I leave any comparisons to be made as an exercise to the reader.

Amazons Attack!

Behold, the majesty of reusable artwork! These were the only 3 DC chibis available to us while Mike was out of town. To be honest, I haven't read anything related to Amazons Attack outside of Countdown, but it seemed like a bad reveal anyway. Weren't the Amazons supposed to be out of our universe anyway? I guess Infinite Crisis retconned that faster than Black Adam got his powers back after 52.

Booster Gold is definitely the most exciting book coming out of DC, as issue 2 hit stands yesterday. The Sinestro Corps storyline is also quite solid, and I sit on the edge of my seat awaiting every new issue (but thank you once again, Countdown, for spoiling something that probably won't occur for a few months down the road in the main books). Still, Marvel has the most promising storylines on the way. I've been reading interviews about Secret Invasion and Messiah Complex, which better damn well revitalize the failing X-books (X-Factor is amazing, and New X-Men isn't bad, but Astonishing needs to wrap up already and the main 2 books are just floundering).

And I have the DVD for Stan Lee Presents Mosaic biding its time on my coffee table, just waiting for me to watch... it scares me.

The Ultimate Retcon

We're a little late on this comic, and it's not finished yet, Mike's going to touch up a few things here and there, and Scott needs to color. I figured that it would be better to post this nearly finished version for the time being though.

Apparently, Skrulls have been infiltrating the Marvel Universe and anybody could be one. The concept itself is pretty interesting, although it is one ripped off from Deep Space Nine. The problem lies in that it provides the ultimate retcon for anything that Marvel wants. Iron Man was a dick? Nope, it was a Skrull. Cap dead? Nope just a Skrull. Elektra going crazy and killing the Avengers? Guess what? Skrull! It's like what Mutants did for Origin stories. Look people are born with powers! It's the pinnacle of lazy writing. Back in the day, writers had to come up with retcons the hard way by making Magneto Xorn's brother who was pretending to be Xorn pretending to be Magneto. Hell, even DC had Superboy punch time.

Okay, maybe skrulls are a good thing.

Mike went to China

Mike went on yet another business trip to China for an undisclosed period of time. Although I begged and pleaded with him to draw, he was unable to finish our next comic in time. Instead of going without updates, Scott and I have decided to try out best at producing art. It goes without saying that you might notice a decrease in art quality during the next week or two. My contribution is the chibi strip below:

Yes, I know this is incorrect. Kristen Bell actually showed up at the Fanboys panel and not the Heroes panel, but I figured it would be a good way to tie in the recent announcement that Veronica Mars herself would be joining the Heroes cast. For those that never gave Veronica Mars a chance, I encourage you to pick up a DVD set or two. It might look like YADCRO (Yet Another Dawson's Creek Rip Off), and although the target audience might be female, it's still a damn funny and witty show. It might have a "teen dramedy" outer shell, but it has soft gooey "detective show" center. I mean what else are you going to watch until Heroes comes back?

NSFW

Since Mike is still in China here is another chibi I threw together. It outlines the good and bad that comes with using chibi characters; it makes it easy for Tim and I to throw a strip together, but it also makes it easy for Tim and I to throw a strip together. In that vein, we have a script for an actual comic joke strip ready; expect to see that in the next couple days. The art won't be anything new, but I can promise some good World War Hulk fun once Mike returns.

I finally have seen all the episodes of the first season of the new Fantastic Four cartoon, and it is just a bunch of LOLs. The dynamic between Thing and Human Torch, and Invisible Woman and Human Torch, and Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, etc. makes every episode a fun ride. I have also seen all but two Legion of Super-Heroes episodes, and the only thing I keep thinking is how it isn't as much fun as Teen Titans. But I look forward to the next season, in which Comic-Con previews seem to suggest an evil (or darker at least) Superboy. Also I look forward to more Triplicate Girl.

Comic Con Stuff

I'm not exactly sure why Ice has a seal in this strip, except for the fact that Ice is cold, and Seals like the cold. It is sort of disturbing that the Giffen era JLI has just been totally destroyed. What is probably one of the best light hearted eras of comics has literally been raped, beaten and killed. Is there any Justice in the world of comics? Who's next the former members of Young Justice? (oh wait).

As you may have known, we got back from Comic-Con a week ago, and I thought I'd post some of the sketches I got. The first sketch is actually done by Mark Bagley at Emerald City Comic-Con. I somehow made it on to his sketch list as the very last person, then somehow managed to get him to draw two characters (Ultimate Spidey and Deadpool). The next three are from Comic-Con. Todd Nauck drew me a Robin and Impulse from Young Justice. I considered getting a Superboy, but he was only doing head sketches so I figured I better get some masks. I got Jim Calafiore do draw me an excellent full body Blink sketch. If you're not reading Exiles it's by far one of the most creative comics being published today. It's sort of a "What If" spinoff, with a consistent cast. For the last sketch, I got a Darkseid from Bruce Timm, creator of the Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: TAS, Batman Beyond, and Justice League.

Stay tuned for more comic-con stories in the near future.

Seal of Approval

Ice is holding a seal because she's hungry. I think you should read that one issue of Martian Manhunter about the Chocos, Tim.

I guess I should also mention how disappointed that Ice was brought back. And in Birds of Prey, a book I don't read, no less! I read Checkmate and did a triple-take. I really liked the character, but her death was quite powerful and integral to Fire and Guy Gardner. Oh well, at least Jean Grey and Captain America are still dead.

Stories from Comic-Con

This is somewhat a true story. I was in the Hasbro line to buy an Alternator Rodimus Prime, and Transformer Movie toys, pondering what to buy my girlfriend. Of course given that it is a Comic-Con, the options are somewhat limited. My friend suggested a R2-KT, and it fit the bill accordingly. As a side note, when your significant other complains that you don't buy her enough flowers, showing up with over $200 worth of Transformers is a recipe for disaster.

I've switched the order of the news posts, so that the newer posts show up on the top. I find this order more pleasing, so you will have to adjust to my whims.
